|Our July 4, 2012 parade was a big success
History of the Parade
After many years of hard work, culminating in the best parade ever in 2012, the leadership of the Wakefield
Independence Day Committee, Inc., has resigned. Many of these individuals had contributed their time and
expertise for 20-35 years, and we sincerely thank them.
We are hopeful that the Town will identify new community members who can continue this great event.
The Wakefield Independence Day Committee, organized in the fall of 1990, planned and scheduled activities in
celebration of Independence Day as well as other historic events. Its purpose was to advance the knowledge
of and build community spirit in celebration of our nation’s heritage.
We were proud to continue the tradition of Wakefield’s Fourth of July Parade in 2012. First organized by the
town’s Chamber of Commerce in the 1920s, the parade was coordinated by a local social club before the WIDC
took responsibility in 1990.
We have worked hard and built this event into the largest July 4 parade in Massachusetts, and second-largest
in New England.
The WIDC is registered as a 501(c)(3) organization, and contributions made in support of the parade may be
considered charitable donations.
